Summary:
Hawaii certified peer specialist (HCPS) is an active member of the HICM + program and provides peer support services to client with serious mental illnesses and or homeless. The HCPS will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for clients in housing and on the streets homeless.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of the recovery process, treatment plan and mental health recovery process.
- Knowledge of problem solving strategies to support self-directed recovery that include working knowledge of mental illness signs/symptoms (i.e. auditory/visual hallucinations, aggressive talk and behaviors, thoughts of self harm towards other, isolation).
- Able to navigate community resources.
- Possess personal qualities of integrity, patience and commitment to mission.
- Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least 1 year of sobriety and stability in the community.
- Certified as a Hawaii Peer Specialist.
