Visual Editor
The Courier Journal/courier-journal.com part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced journalist to lead our visual team.
The Visual Editor will work with the executive editor and other editors to oversee the creation and production of visuals and stills on various platforms.
The candidate will help formulate a strong visual plan ensuring the visual products enhance the articles. In addition, the editor will ensure visual journalists work is highly visible both in print and online; this includes working with the Planning Editor to ensure visuals are a key element of the Courier Journal’s social media plans.
The Courier Journal is one of the largest newsrooms in the USA TODAY Network and is an 11-time Pulitzer Prize-winning news organization in a metro area known for its nationally recognized chefs and restaurants; vibrant music scene, including the Forecastle music festival; world-class bourbon distilleries; and Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The quality of life is sky-high and the cost of living is impressively low.
Responsibilities:
•Have ongoing conversations with reporters, editors and visual journalists about stories, video and photos.
•Lead staffers with coaching, feedback, consistent direction.
•Use audience analytics to advise visual journalists on content-creations plans.
•Assign daily tasks to visual journalists, and ability to assist with those tasks in the field.
•Assign projects to the photographers and manage their work and progress.
•Review photos, edit and make necessary changes.
•Decide which images to publish.
•Recognize future coverage that has high-audience potential and works with other newsroom leaders to craft appropriate visual coverage plans.
•Oversee and maintain equipment as well as necessary contracts and agreements pertaining to visuals.
•Ensure all assignments are shot and edited on time for publication.
•Stay up to date with the new best practices and editing technologies.
•Identify opportunities to livestream and other ways to provide video each day.
•Understand Google Analytics and other data tools to help guide photo assignment decisions.
•Advocate for photography and provide editorial support in shaping daily publication on all platforms.
Requirements:
•Previous working experience as a Photo Editor for (5) year(s)
•Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•More than 10 years of visual journalism experience.
•Advanced knowledge of still photography and videography equipment, with a keen eye toward emerging technology.
•Knowledge of Adobe creative suite.
•Exceptional core journalism skills (reporting, producing, editing).
•Excellent coaching and team-building skills.
•Excellent and extensive portfolio.
•In-depth knowledge of computer imaging and studio management.
•5 years of experience with digital technology.
•Experience with live video including using live units.
•Attention to details.
•Excellent leadership and time management skills.
•Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
•Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
•Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
•Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals.
•Proactive and consistently have creative ideas for visual and video storytelling.
•Drone license and experience a plus.
•Know of audio equipment and podcast editing and production.
